San Antonio Spurs

Due to the bunch of surprises in the NBA this season, all the discussions and all the buzz revolves around teams like the Portland Trail Blazers and the Indiana Pacers, which are performing exceptionally well. We also hear many discussions about the struggling New York Knicks, the Brooklyn Nets and the Los Angeles Lakers. However, there is a team which is currently passing under the radar and it a sleeping force in the Western Conference. That’s Gregg Popovic’s San Antonio Spurs.

The company of Tony Parker, Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili is doing pretty well this season, just like they do almost every season. They currently hold a 19-5 record and lie at the third seed in the Western Conference. Of course, the Portland Trail Blazers have all the flashlights on them, as they are recording a surprisingly good season while they weren’t really expected to play that good.

Nonetheless, the Spurs are a team that doesn’t draw much attention from the media but still manages to deliver when it matters the most, during the playoffs. San Antonio remains quiet during the regular season. Of course, they will win many games and they might even blowout some of their opponents. However, their force sometimes gets neglected.

The Spurs are playing their usual intense defense, the one that Gregg Popovic has taught them and they are also superb on the offensive end. In fact, the team looks like it has much depth this season, after the addition of Marco Belinelli and the emergence of Danny Green last season.

Tony Parker is still having the charge. He leads the team in points with 17.5 per game and also 6.0 assists. Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili follow with 13.9 and 11.0 points respectively. Kawhi Leonard, who was expected to improve each game this season, is proving why he is considered one of the most promising small forwards in the league. He is averaging 11.8 points and 6.0 rebounds while shooting 51.5 percent from the floor this season.

Marco Belinelli has proved out to be a perfect fit for the San Antonio Spurs. After the devastating loss in the NBA Finals last season, the Spurs needed an upgrade at their bench. Belinelli is the player who can take over when the stars of the team are struggling. He is the one who can produce as much as Ginobili does, when given the chance.

The Spurs are looking to close the year strong. They have five more games at home until the end of 2013 and the aim for them is to remain at the top seeds of the Western Conference. The San Antonio Spurs will have another shot to the championship this season. This might be their last one with this formation, considering the fact that Tim Duncan is 37 and Manu Ginobili was considering retirement after the Finals loss last season.

One thing is for sure, the San Antonio Spurs shouldn’t be neglected when it comes to title contenting teams.
