PANGASINAN, Philippines –International money transfer brand Xpress Money recently partnered with GMA Kapuso Foundation (GMAKF) to rehabilitate three dilapidated classrooms in underserved Poponto Elementary School in Bautista, Pangasinan through the Kapuso School Development (KSD) Project. With a P1-million donation, the classrooms will be restored to full capacity and benefit up to 150 students of the school.

The partnership was sealed in a ceremony held recently at the Poponto Elementary school, graced by Mayor AmadeoEspino, along with GMA Kapuso Foundation Executive Director Winifred Avendaño, Department of Education Assistant Schools Division Superintendent Joan Corpuz, Xpress Money Country Manager Eduardo Cobangbang and school principal Fedelito Capudoy.

Inadequate funds and manpower has led some the classrooms to become rundown over the years, making them unfit to use. With a student population of over 264 and only a limited number of classrooms, every classroomcounts for Poponto Elementary School.

“For a country with a classroom shortage of over 6,000, and one of the countries with the highest student to classroom ratio in Asia, we want to contribute in helping alleviate these challenges,” said Cobangbang. “Apart from the renovation of the classrooms, we are also looking to provide chairs, tables and books for the school to truly make a difference to the school and the students.”

This initiative is part of Xpress Money’s worldwide sustainable corporate responsibility platformcalled H.O.P.E., which stands for Helping Our People and Our Environment. This initiative focuses on implementinginclusive social intervention and community support programs across the world, which are driven by three global themes – financial literacy, relief, and education. Other programs rolled-out internationally that are geared toward education are the Book Donation Drive in Nepal and the Adopt-a-School program in India.

In the Philippines, Xpress Money has previously initiated a back-to-schoolprogram, which was also in partnership with GMA Kapuso Foundation, where they provided school bags and a complete set of school supplies to 4,000 grade one pupils in public schools in Nueva Ecija, Abra and Tawi-Tawi provinces through the Unang Hakbang Sa Kinabukasan (UHSK) Project.

“Xpress Money is deeply committed to contributing to the growth of communities that the company is part of, and every year, we are extending our initiatives in helping Filipino children with their education,” added Cobangbang.

According to Municipal Mayor Hon. Amadeo Espino, Poponto is blessed to be the beneficiary of this project, having been chosen out of the 1,333 barangays in Pangasinan. Moreover, GMAKF’s Avendaño said, “Renovating these classrooms is just one of the numerous long-term projects of GMA Kapuso Foundation. This project will not be possible without the generosity and continuous support of Xpress Money. We commend them for the passion and commitment to make a difference in the lives of these children at Poponto Elementary School.
