MANILA, PHILIPPINES—Only few moments to go before President Benigno Aquino III’s 4th State of the Nation Address (SONA), protests seem to flood ahead.

This afternoon, civilians and cops were hurt after a confrontation occurred against militants who tried to force their way to the Batasan Complex, where Aquino will deliver his SONA.

“The clash erupted after the demonstrators tried to break the police barricade,” said Police Director Marcelo Garbo Jr., head of the National Police Regional Office INCRPO)

“We are disappointed with the demonstrators though. We offered symbols of peace but they disregarded our offer,” Garbo added.

At least 10 cops and some civilians were hurt on the said confrontation.

However, 10 protesters were arrested and taken to Camp Karingal Police Station in Quezon City.

Malacañang has already appealed to protesters to observe discipline and sobriety and avoid throwing sticks and stones at the police in charge of areas right outside Congress.

“We call on the protesters converged on Commonwealth Avenue, Quezon City, to exercise discipline and sobriety as they exercise their right to peacefully assemble. We call on all of them to bear in mind the inconveniences their actions may cause the general public,” said Presidential Spokesman Edwin Lacierda.

As of this afternoon, at least 20,000 demonstrators flooded Commonwealth Avenue.
