PDP-Laban is setting its eyes on Davao Mayor Rodrigo Duterte as the party’s presidential bet for the 2016 national elections. The party has also stated that they will be having a “heart-to-heart” talk with the mayor regarding his alleged links to vigilante-style killings of suspected criminals in the city, as a preparation for their presidential campaign.
“Although the party believes in federalism, the party also believes in the inherent dignity of the human being, so [with] the right to life, respect [for] life,” said former senator Nene Pimentel, head of PDP-Laban. He also added that Duterte can be the “face of federalism,” a governing principle the party is fighting for.
The mayor, however, has not yet been formally endorsed as the party’s presidential bet for the coming elections.
As for Duterte, he said that he is “not on that track [to the Presidency]” just yet.
“I’ll keep an open mind,” he said. “It’s not that simple. I have to ask myself, can I do it? I’m old and I have no money. I’ve served government for 30 years-22 years as Davao mayor-maybe that’s enough.”
