Manila, Philippines – The Senate Minority bloc claimed that there is nothing illegal in transferring the pork barrel to non-government organizations (NGO).
The Senate Minority explained that the General Appropriations Act contains provisions allowing the transfer of funds to NGOs, people’s organizations and civil society organizations.
The issue was highlighted after the Commission on Audit (COA) noted that the transfer of money from the lawmakers’ Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) was “without legal basis.”
Meanwhile, Senator Vicente Sotto in his privilege speech proclaimed that as a way to prevent any controversy in using his PDAF, he will let go of his pork barrel.
Sotto also lamented that half of his P100 million pork barrel this year is alloted to the University of the Philippines and other state colleges and universities for tuition assistance while the other half will be provided to specialty regional government hospitals.
