MANILA, Philippines – Despite of hot political issues, Vice President Jejomar Binay said on Thursday that the late President Cory Aquino, mother of President Benigno Aquino III, will always be the shining icon of the Philippine democracy.
Binay described the late president, who came to power after the 1986 Edsa People Power Revolution, as a beacon who rallied her people “to the path of democratic rule.”
“By her example, President Cory reminded all of us the value of humility, the importance of respecting the supremacy of the Constitution, and the rewards of unflinching faith in the wisdom of the Almighty,” Binay said in a statement.
He paid tribute to her abiding faith in democracy.
Binay had been close to Aquino because he was one of the human rights lawyers, then under the group MABINI, who took up the cudgels for victims of the Marcos dictatorship. At one point, during the 4-day EDSA people power revolt in 1986, he was said to have mustered the “security forces” for the then-candidate Aquino whose victory in the snap election was marred by fraud, according to report.
