Honeybees are not aggressive by nature, and will not sting unless they are protecting their hive from an intruder. We are often said to be a greater danger to bees, we destroy their homes and kill them before they prick us painfully. But would you believe that a man can be swathed by angry bees without being bitten at all?

Meet She Ping, 34 years old of Chongqing in southwest China. He is a Chinese beekeeper and honey merchant. He is so dedicated to his business that he is willing to cover himself with thousands of bees just to generate some marketing buzz. He used queen bees to attract the insects on him to create a whopping 100-pound body suit.

“I first did this at 22, just for fun and out of curiosity. Later on, I would put on the bees just for the sake of making people believe I sell actual honey,” he told the Chongqing Evening Post.

During a publicity stunt, She noted that he avoided taking a shower and using soap because “it can excite the bees.” He covered his body with more than 460,000 bees designed to increase sales for his business, a technique called “bee bearding.” Bee bearding is a global pursuit but it is especially popular in the city of Chongqing where local honey merchants regularly cover themselves with bees.

The process of bee bearding starts by placing a queen bee in a small cage that hangs from the person’s body. Eventually, the bees swarm over the participant’s body. In this case, Ping was only protected by a plastic bag over his head.

“To be honest, I felt very nervous, but I do it to promote my honey,” She told the AFP. “I’m used to dealing with bees and started these activities when I was about 22.”

“The last time I did this, I put on a total of 15 beehives on my body, but today I’m breaking my own record (with 28),” he shared via CNT.

The honey peddler said the ordeal felt “hot and suffocating” and he was stung more than 20 times.

Collectively, the bees weighed more than 100 pounds (45 kilograms), but it doesn’t come close to Vipin Seth’s world record for wearing a total of 135 pounds (61.4 kilograms) of bees on Mar. 9, 2009, according to a Guinness World Record YouTube video.

Although She’s attempt fell short of a world record, he has given himself the record for carrying out the stunt without any clothes.

“Of the people who do it naked, I’m probably the most awesome,” She smiled pompously.

Whether She Ping has crazy dedication for his business or he is simply wild, his feat is worth sharing.
