MANILA- The Sandiganbayan on Thursday convicted former Pasay City Mayor Wenceslao “Peewee” Trinidad and former Pasay City Rep. Jose Antonio Roxas of graft charges for the award of a contract without proper bidding to a company in 2004.
The Sandiganbayan sentenced both accused to suffer a jail term of from six years to 10 years.
In the ruling of the Sandiganbayan First Division, it said that the prosecution had proven that Trinidad and Roxas conspired in the contract entered by the city government.
The said contract almost reached the amount of Php500 million entered into between the two former Pasay City officials and the Izumo Contractors, Inc. (Izumo Contractors).
Among the projects included in the questionable transaction were the Pasay City Mall and the public market of the City of Pasay, which are both located in Libertad, Pasay City.
The national government has earlier stopped the construction of the said structures for violation of the Government Procurement Reforms Act.
However, the then two city officials still proceeded with the projects and awarded the contract to the Izumo Contractors.
Aside from jail term, the two former city officials were also perpetually disqualified from holding any government position. Perfecto T. Raymundo/PNA
