TACLOBAN CITY- The local police office here reported that the city’s nightly activities in relation to the upcoming fiesta on June 30 have been peaceful.
City police director Sr. Supt. Domingo Cabillan believed that the deployment of policemen in the city has been pre-empting any untoward incidents during nightly activities at the parks and carnival.
Since the start of the nightly activities on June 5, the official said they have not received any report regarding untoward incident or crimes committed in areas where many people converge at night.
“With the cooperation of the people here in Tacloban and with the police visibility, I can say that it is generally peaceful in the city even with the on-going nightly activities,” he added.
However, he confirmed that their number is insufficient, which prompted them to overstretch their time and efforts just to render full security service.
The city police force are already overworked because some of them are deployed in different schools while others secure nightly activities.
“We request for additional policemen from the regional office especially this upcoming fiesta celebration since we expect a lot of visitors,” Cabillan said.
“Even if we have insufficient number of policemen, we maximize our police forces. As long as we help each other, we can serve and protect the people in the city,” he added.
The police officer said the ideal number of policemen in the city ranges from 400 to 500 in order for them not to be “overstretched.”
As of now, the city has 310 policemen or a ratio of one police for every 500 residents.
The city has a population of 242,000, but the number triples during daytime due to influx of students, buyers and businessmen from other towns.
Meanwhile, policemen asked business owners to be security-conscious and be aware with the surroundings.
“If they are selling liquors, once they notice that their customers are already unruly, they must advice them to go home already or if not report to the policemen near them to avoid any troubles,” Cabillan said. PNA
