A tarpaulin bearing a call for justice for the slain Dennis Mesias in Leyte

KNOWN Filipino lawyer and senatorial candidate Lorna Kapunan has expressed support to a widow in Leyte province after the latter sought help to solve the murder case of her husband.

The widow Arlene Mesias of Barugo, Leyte continues to demand justice for the murder of her husband Dennis in September 12, 2012.

However in October 20, 2013, police nabbed the main suspect Alexander Tremedal, who is now behind bars.

Tatlong taon na po, tapos walang pong nangyayari hanggang ngayon. ‘Pag nag hearing, laging postponed ( Three years have passed yet nothing happens until today. Everytime there is a hearing, it is postponed),’’ said Arlene in a television interview with ABS-CBN local channel.

The Mesias family pursued the case further after the alleged gunman made a new revelation and issued a  judicial affidavit on Feb. 6, 2016 alleging on the involvement of Leyte 2nd district board member Anlie Apostol along with five others, namely Vilma and Alfredo Obaob, Melanio Dacallos, Jay-R Tumamak and Emmanuel Santos on the issue.

Reportedly Tremedal worked as one of Apostol’s security guards in a gasoline station owned by Apostol in Barugo town.

Tremedal said he was ordered to kill Mesias after the latter was accused of stealing diesel in the said gas station.

He shot Mesias using .45 calibre pistol, sending him to his death.

However Apostol strongly denied the accusations and her link to the crime, saying the case against her is “politically motivated”.

Apostol is running as mayor of Carigara in Leyte this May 2016 elections.

She is the daughter of incumbent Leyte 2nd district congressman Sergio Apostol and former congresswoman and mayor of Carigara Trinidad Apostol

”This is simple and clear-cut politics….Don’t destroy us with dirty politics in Leyte because we will fight for what is true,’’ Apostol told the Freeman newspaper in an earlier report.

Natatakot po para sa sarili ko at sa pamilya namin, dahil napakalaking tao po nitong babanggain namin (I am afraid for myself and for our family, because we’re against a very influential person),’’ added the widow in her TV interview.

It’s been three years that the family is seeking justice. Justice has yet to be served. The question, who owns the gun, who gives the gun, who kills, where does he work, who’s his boss)?” asked Atty. Kapunan.

A motion to suspend the proceedings at Regional Trial Court of Carigara was then filed to continue preliminary investigation on the issued affidavit of Tremedal.

Hearing of the said motion is set on May 28, 2016.
