THE ROAD in Philippines will soon have Electric Buses and Electric Jeepneys or “eJeepneys” to combat the country’s prevalent metropolis problems of air pollution, noise and traffic congestion.

This will become a reality because Columbian Motors Corporation (CMC) has inked a Cooperation Agreement with BYD Auto Industry Company Limited of China (BYD) at it’s headquarters in Shenzhen, China.

CMC will be introducing fully electric buses, jeepneys, and trucks. The good news is these vehicles will be emitting zero emissions, zero noise pollution and zero heat.

They are very energy efficient as they consume zero-energy during “stops” which are very prevalent and unavoidable in urban city traffic. Unlike conventional diesel powered engines which continuously burn fuel, waste energy as well as pollute the environment with toxic exhaust emissions while being stationery in start-stop urban city traffic.

This new technology impressively reduces operational costs by up to 60%, and proves to be a solution to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change because of its eco-sustainability.

This new development in the Philippines public transportation sector is very significant, important and timely as it is in conjunction with the implementation of the government’s policy to modernize inefficient exhaust polluting, high carbon-emitting and fuel guzzling models of commercial vehicles, typically which the majority are made up of buses and jeepneys.

This is also in line with Philippines recently becoming a partner to The Paris Agreement on Climate Change Initiative.

The Cooperation Agreement was signed between CMC’s CEO Arsenio G. Yap and BYD’s General Manager for Asia Pacific Auto Sales Division, Liu Xueliang, and witnessed by CMC’s Philippine delegates, Governor of Palawan Jose Chaves Alvarez and Dr.Justin Periera.

The cooperation also includes an Agreement in which BYD appoints CMC as it’s Exclusive Distributor for Electric Buses and Commercial Vehicles for the Philippines.

With this, CMC has also been appointed to provide after sales service for the same. In addition, a separate sales agreement was signed for 10 BYD K9 Electric Buses and 12 BYD T4 Electric Commercial Vehicle Platforms which CMC will build Electric Jeepneys.

These will be delivered to CMC by mid-February 2018 and will immediately undergo trial runs on the streets of Manila for comprehensive evaluation under Philippine roads, weather and environment in order to determine should modifications be needed to suit local adaptability.

The footprint of BYD new energy fully electric vehicles has landed in 50 countries and regions and over 200 cities worldwide. BYD’s K9 pure electric bus can travel up to a maximum speed of 70 km per hour with a range of up to 200 kilometers It is operational in the Canadian city of Alberta and is currently running in Kyoto, Japan.

BYD’s T4 pure electric vans are equipped with lithium batteries, permanent magnet synchronous motors and a maximum speed of 100 km per hour.

“Air pollution and traffic congestion are twin problems many cities around the world are faced with,” said Liu Xueliang, General Manager for BYD Asia Pacific Auto Sales Division. “We are very excited to bring more of our solutions to the Philippines to create a cleaner living environment for everyone.”
