AT LEAST 38 people were confirmed dead when a motorized passenger banca MV Nirvana capsized off the waters in Ormoc city, Leyte early Thursday afternoon.
MARINA officials in Eastern Visayas said the boat was carrying 189 people.
Survivors accounted as of Thursday evening reached to 134.
Victims were brought to Gatchalian Hospital, Ormoc District, Ormoc Sugarcane’s Planters Association, and Ormoc Doctor Hospital.
Search and rescue continued for other 17 missing persons.
Authorities have yet to reveal the passenger list and manifest.
Strong waves brought by bad weather caused the boat to overturn after it left Ormoc port about a kilometre away.
The boat was bound for Camotes Island in Cebu city.
