CALBAYOG CITY – A 51 year old housewife followed his husband in jail, who was earlier arrested for drug pushing, shortly after she was arrested by authorities in another drug sting recently.
The police identified the suspect as certain Elizabeth de Guzman Lejera, a smoked fish vendor and resident of Brgy. Matobato, Calbayog City in Samar, who sold a sachet of white crystalline substance suspected as methamphetamine hydrochloride or ‘shabu’ worth five hundred pesos to a PDEA operative posed as a buyer last week in Brgy. Matobato, this city.
PDEA agents said the suspect didn’t learn any lesson from his husband arrest few months ago and went on drug pushing business. Subsequently, the suspect joined her husband Tito in jail, who was arrested by PDEA operatives and PNP Calbayog City in an entrapment operation last May 7, 2012 at around 7:00 o’clock in the evening near a drugstore in Magsaysay Boulevard, Calbayog City.
Authorities said the couple were both under close surveillance and under the watch list of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency based in Calbayog City, (Western) Samar.
“Apparently, husband-and-wife drug peddling teams are becoming more common (nowadays),” said PDEA Director General USec. Arturo G. Cacdac, Jr. saying that similar arrests have also occurred in other parts of the country.
“Drug pushing has become a family business, perhaps due to its profitability, (but) it is unsettling to realize that couples continue to ply their illegal business even at the risk of leaving behind their children when the authorities catch on to them,” Cacdac Jr said.
Meanwhile, PDEA through Regional Director Atty. Gil T. Pabilona will be filing appropriate charges against the suspect for violation of Section 5 of Article II of Republic Act 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002, or the Sale of Dangerous Drugs.
If convicted, PDEA said Lejera will suffer life imprisonment and payment of a fine of five hundred thousand to million pesos depending on the court’s discretion.
The wife of Tito is currently detained at the Calbayog City Police Station custodial facility, awaiting final disposition of her case.
