A 2-minute video has exposed how a parked car exploded and was torn to pieces in a powerful mid-afternoon blast in Zamboanga City that killed two lives and injured 48 casualties, the police confirmed.
The deadly “Zambo car blast” happened around 3:15p.m Friday, January 23 at Fantasy Bar fronting the Guiwan Bus Terminal, in Barangay Guiwan.
Witnesses said that the bomb exploded in a red car, which triggered nearby vehicles to set on fire.
The said explosion also destroyed a tricycle and another car, and crushed glass windows of nearby establishments.
Local media reported that most of the victims were passersby and owners and/or drivers of the vehicles parked in the area.
The casualties were brought to the Zamboanga Peninsula Medical Hospital, according to Captain Rowena Muyuela of the military’s Zamboanga-based Western Mindanao Command.
Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco suspected the Abu Sayaff to be the one responsible for the car explosion.
She believed that it was part of their plot to freed 57 members of the al-Qaida-linked terrorist group Abu Sayyaf detained in the city jail.
Currently, police are investigating the incident and are identifying the people behind the attack and their motives.
