People are now checking the veracity of Mayor Rodrigo Duterte’s claims as he explained his side on the now viral video where he joked about a murdered Australian rape victim.

Duterte apologized, but not for the joke itself.

Here is the complete and unedited interview of Mayor Duterte:

Duterte explained the backstory on how he made the rape joke, appearing like an action hero in some instances.

Short after this, newspaper clippings retelling the crime from 1989 appeared online: the clincher, Duterte was nowhere to be found on these clippings.

There is however undeniable truth to at least one of his claims: that there was a movie adaptation of the incident.

The incident led to 1992 movie titled Pugoy: Hostage Davao, starring Ian Veneracion and directed by Jun Posadas. Watch the movie trailer here:

This is an old movie so it’s not easy to find where you can watch it online. It has been shown however in local Filipino movie TV channels a number of times.

Netizens are asking authorities to release the movie for download. Will we be able to see it? Maybe. But one thing is for sure, seeing the film is unlikely to change the local and international backlash that Duterte’s rape joke brought upon him and our country.
