marwan indictment

Documents from the United States District Court in California have revealed the “intimate” relationship between Malaysian terrorist Zulkifli Abdhir, also known as “Marwan”, and the Moro Islamic Liberation  Front (MILF).

The information, disclosed by Senate Majority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano on Monday, was contained in a 32-page indictment filed against Marwan and his brother, Rahmat Abdhir, in 2007 for conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists, and for providing material support to terrorists, among others.

”It is becoming more clear that Marwan has intimate relationship with the MILF and they (MILF) are lying when they said that they did not know and not protecting Marwan,” Cayetano said.

The document further revealed that Marwan was hosted by MILF commander Abu Hashim in 2005.

Here is an excerpt from the indictment:

“Zulkifli Abdhir  kept Rahmat Abdhir  informed of the situation in the Philippines by providing reports of battles  that were occurring in the region where Zulkifli Abdhir  was  located between troops of the Philippine government and individuals or groups  who were actively  protecting Zulkifli Abdhir, including but not limited to elements of the MILF, as well as by reporting on the involvement of the United States in these conflicts  through the use of Orion spy planes and Predator drones.”

“Zulkifli Abdhir kept Rahmat Abdhir informed of his own activities in the Philippines, including where he was located and whom he was with.”

The US documents also cited email exchanges between the brothers way back in 2006 and 2007. The emails were reportedly written in the Malaysian language.

”Here (indictment documents), the US court detailed the e-mails of the two brothers and show Marwan’s relationship to MILF and he was talking with the MILF commanders,” Cayetano said.

In an email on or about June 29, 2006, Marwan told his brother that: “Earlier, a commander called to inform me that the person who hosted me last year has died a martyr. There has been a battle at his location for six days, and it is still not over yet. The guy was young. I think he was 45. His eldest child is 18 years old. His son-in-law is a friend of mine.”

Another email by Marwan to Rahmat on July 3, 2007 suggests that the Malaysian terrorist conducted training in certain areas in Mindanao.

“Last night I taught a course on sniping. Discontinued today because the troops heard and then came spy planes. The guys who were monitoring the radio could hear the troops to report to their commander. The commanders here attended too..,” the email reads.

Moreover, the charge sheets revealed that the brothers communicated using code names. Marwan was referred to as “Hulagu.”

On July 30, 2006, Marwan wrote again to his brother: “The commander at Hulagu’s location died on Sunday, July 30th at around 4:00pm. He was riding a motorcycle with another person ad a man stopped him. After they talked a little bit, three men with a Garand, an M-14, and an Armalite showed up and shot them at close range. There were a lot of bullets on his chest and abdomen his intestines spilled out, and some of the bullet hit his legs. He died on the spot. It looks like Hulagu needs to relocate again because there is nobody strong enough to provide protection at the location. Need to use money, because relocation requires money.”

The two apparently updated each other and shared news stories about the conflict in Mindanao and about Marwan being a “wanted fugitive’’ in the Philippines.

Marwan is an international terrorist who had USD5 million bounty on his head. He was  killed in the ‘Oplan Exodus’ carried out by the Philippine National Police Special Action Force (PNP-SAF) in Mamasapano, Maguindanao on Jan. 25. 44 SAF commandos were also killed.

Marwan’s death has also been confirmed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) after his DNA sample matched that of his brother, now detained in the US.

With the documents that proved that Marwan has connections with the MILF, Cayetano encouraged the Philippine government peace negotiators to look for a different group that is sincere to pursue the peace process in Mindanao.

The senator also challenged the MILF leadership to admit their relationship to Marwan.
