A $50-million defamation lawsuit has been filed by Tom Cruise last Wednesday against publications accusing him to have abandoned his daughter.
The actor filed the suit against the publishers of In Touch and Life & Style Weekly magazines for their allegations of Cruise’s abandoning his six-year old daughter with Katie Holmes, Suri. This came after the Life & Style’s July 30 issue cover showing a photo of the child crying with the headline, “Suri in Tears, Abandoned by Her Dad.”
Cruise filed the lawsuit at the U.S. District in Los Angeles, California. His lawyer, Atty. Bert Fields, gave a statement regarding his client’s reaction towards the issue: “Tom is a caring father who dearly loves Suri. To say he has ‘abandoned’ her is a vicious lie. To say it in lurid headlines with a tearful picture of Suri is reprehensible.”
Fields does not only aim to point out how the malicious controversy has stained Cruise’s celebrity reputation but also to prove that the headlines and articles were false and defamatory, especially that the actor loves his daughter much.
“Tom doesn’t go around suing people,” the lawyer added. “He’s not a litigious guy. But when these sleaze peddlers try to make money with disgusting lies about his relationship with his child, you bet he’s going to sue.”
