Netizens are crying foul upon seeing this video of a student mopping the floor using the Philippine flag.
The video has now gone viral and is spreading like wildfire across social media, where it shows a still unidentified male student mopping the floor using the flag tied to a stick. It was first posted on the Filipino Netizens Facebook page, and has now garnered over a million views and 28,000 shares.
What is more annoying in the video is that spectators (alleged classmates of the student) are heard laughing and cursing, like it was just a fun activity.
But this is no laughing matter. The student can be charged with a criminal offense when identified and apprehended. This is because any act of disrespect to the Philippine flag is prohibited under the law.
According to Republic Act No. 8491 or “Act Prescribing the Code of the National Flag, Anthem, Motto, Coat-of-Arms and Other Heraldic Items and Devices of the Philippines,” reverence and respect shall at times be accorded the flag, the anthem and other national symbols which embody the national ideals and traditions and which express the principles of sovereignty and national solidarity.”
Offenders may face up to one year imprisonment and/or a fine of up to Php20,000.
