A female thief swallowed a 6-carat diamond after stealing it at the Bangkok Gems and Jewelry Fair in Nonthaburi, Thailand.
The thief was identified as 39-year-old Jiang Xulian, a native of China. She was arrested together with her male companion, Hae Ying, 34. Xulian and Ying were identified by the diamond dealer through the footage taken by a security surveillance camera.
Xulian initially denied the crime, but later confessed after an X-ray scan. The results showed a diamond-like object inside her large intestine. The authorities then called a doctor to perform a colonoscopy on the suspect; the doctor was able to remove the diamond from her intestine, which costs around 10 million baht or $278,000.
According to the police, the operation lasted for only 12 minutes, and that Xulian is already recovering at the hospital. She and her partner Ying may face up to three years behind bars when convicted.
