The four individuals allegedly abducted by the Abu Sayyaf Group are now seeking help from the Canadian Government to coordinate with the Philippine Government to stop the current military operations and rather pursue a proper negotiation so that they can be set free.

Two Canadian nationals, John Ridsdel and Robert Hall, Norwegian Kjartan Sekkingstad, and Filipina Marithes Flor were abducted by unidentified men at a resort in Samal Island last 21 September 2015.

According to police reports, 11 armed men arrived at the Holiday Oceanview Resort located in the island, and nabbed the victims at gunpoint around 11:20 pm.

Since the kidnapping incident, The Canadian government has issued a travel ban on its citizens planning to visit ARMM, as well as Western and Central Mindanao. In addition, the Canadian government said that “the threat of terrorist activities exists throughout the country, including in major cities.”

The travel advisory also warned its citizens to “expect to be subject to frequent security checks at public and private facilities, including shopping malls and public transportations.

The abduction was the first in Davao region since 2001.
