MANILA, Philippines – Datu Sajid Islam Ampatuan, isa sa mga suspek ng Maguindanao Massacre case, managed to post bail of P11.6 million after a Quezon City court granted his request for temporary freedom.
The son of Maguindanao ex-governor Andal Ampatuan Sr. was released today after the Quezon City Regional Trial Court Branch 221 allowed his request for bail, which the court set at P200,000 for every count of murder, or amounting to P11.6 million for 58 counts filed against him and his fellow suspects.
Ayon kay Judge Jocelyn Solis-Reyes, the prosecution team failed to provide strong evidence that required for the suspect to be detained through the duration of the trial. Dagdag pa niya, Sajid Islam did not participate in any discussions that resulted in the massacre.
However, Solis-Reyes turned down the petitions for bail of Anwar Ampatuan Sr. and Akmad “Tato” Ampatuan, citing the suspects’ more active role.
DOJ Secretary Leila de Lima immediately responded to the ruling by ordering the Prosecutor General to file a counter petition at the Court of Appeals.
