A newly married Pakistani woman has been charged with murder after a poisoned milk she allegedly planned to give her husband inadvertently killed at least 17 of her relatives.
Aasia Bibi, 21, was forced into an arranged marriage in September with Amjad Akram, 25.
District Police Chief Sohail Habib Tajak, says the woman obtained a poisonous substance from her boyfriend, Shadid Lashari, and mixed it in the milk for her husband, who refused to drink it.
Bibi’s mother-in-law later used the tainted milk to make a traditional yogurt-based drink and served it to 27 members of her extended family.
Reports claimed seventeen people died because of the incident and 10 were being treated in a hospital.
Police chief Tajak says, Bibi was not happy with her husband and wanted to return to her parent’s home, however, her parents forcibly returned her to her in-laws’ house.
Moreover, Bibi reportedly claimed at first that a lizard had fallen into the milk, poisoning it, but later expressed remorse over the deaths saying that her target was only her husband.
Police have already arrested Bibi, her lover and her aunt, who are suspected to have a role in the incident.
