TACLOBAN CITY, Leyte—Some 2.1 Billion in redevelopment fund was allocated recently to the Daniel Z. Romualdez (DZR) Airport in Tacloban City.

The amount approved by the National Economic Development Authority is intended for the improvement of the DZR Airport terminal building to accommodate the increasing volume of air travelers. The terminal building will have about 9,000 to 10,000 square meters.

Area Manager Antonio Alfonso, of the Civil Aviation Authorities of the Philippines (CAAP) that supervises airport operations, said the increase of flights to the City and “the call of times” make the improvement of the airport building and its facilities necessary.

An expected increase of air travelers will happen in the airport next year as candidates running for national posts do their campaign sorties, Alfonso added.

It can be remembered that President Aquino in his second State of the Nation Address (SONA) mentioned the redevelopment of the DZR Airport.  The president said he wants the project to be realized under his term, it being one of the projects under the private-public partnership (PPP).

The DZR airport is one of six PPP to be given funding for improvement by the NEDA board.
