Filipino-American and Snapchat co-founder Bobby Murphy is currently the world’s second youngest billionaire, according to Forbes’ annual report listing down the world’s richest people. At only 26, Murphy’s net worth is now reported to be somewhere around $1.5 billion; he is second in the youngest billionaires list, after Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel.
While Snapchat enjoys massive popularity among teens and young adults, it had humble beginnings according to Murphy, who told Forbes they didn’t see themselves as cool, “So we tried to build things to be cool,” he said.
Snapchat is currently valued at $10 billion, with Murphy having a 15% stake in the company. The Forbes report indicates Murphy’s parents, one of whom emigrated from the Philippines, were government employees in California. The Fil-Am grew up in Berkeley, California, later receiving a degree in Mathematical and Computational Science in Stanford, where he would meet fellow Snapchat founders Spiegel and Reggie Brown.
Snapchat is a social media app that allows users to take photos and videos on their mobile devices and send it to friends, after which the message “self-destructs” on the recipient’s device. The app’s userbase indicates 100 million active users in its network.
