BORONGAN CITY – The Department of Health awarded P1 million to Eastern Samar Provincial Health Office for their immediate containment of the Filariases disease in the province.

Dr. Irma Labro Asuncion, Director of Center for Disease Prevention and Control handed the check to Provincial Health Officer, Dr. Marian Isiderio and Mr. Berlindo Morallos, the Executive Assistant of Governor Conrado B. Nicart, Jr. last Thursday.

Asuncion hailed the health workers and the local officials for doing its share in the government’s move to achieve the health objective of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) for a disease free nation by end of 2015.

Eastern Samar is the 12th province in the country to have been declared Filaria-free and the 3rd in Eastern Visayas. The first was Southern Leyte in 2008 and then Biliran province in 2010.

Meanwhile, Mayor Emiliana Villacarillo of Dolores, Eastern Samar also asked the DOH central office to free their town of Schistosomiasis.

The town of Dolores was one of the top performers in the elimination of Filariasis but its town chief said Dolores is also endemic to the Schistosomiases.

DOH-8 Assistant Regional Director Dr. Minerva Molon promised to send more health workers and medicines to counter the spread of the disease. Some 22 Eastern Samar mayors also wished the same.

Molon said the DOH is doing everything to make Eastern Visayas a disease-free zone, as a commitment to the Millennium Development Goals (MDG).

“We appeal to the residents to cooperate and help our health workers attain this vision,” Molon said.
