August 15, 2017‒ There has been a decrease in the number of index crimes committed from January till July of 2017 compared to last year’s index crime rate for the same period of time. This was manifested during the 2017 Joint Regional Development Council VIII (RDC8) and Regional Peace and Order Council (RPOC) Eastern Visayas Summit held in Tacloban City.
A 15.59% decrease for the crimes committed against persons and a significant 53.37% decrease for crimes committed against property were recorded by the committee.
In total, 1,050 crimes committed against persons were recorded while 651 were crimes against property. 26% of the totality of the crime index is theft cases, 11.5% is murder, 35.5% is physical injuries, 9.5 % is robbery cases,10% is rape while the rest involves car napping, motor napping and cattle rustling.
The decline in the number of crime reported incidents transpired during the implementation of the Police Regional Office 8’s Anti Illegal Drug Campaign: Double Barrel Reloaded last March of this year. The One-Time-Big-Time anti drug campaign of the PRO8 was also attributed as the reason for the increase in the crime trend particularly for the months of May to July this year.
According to PRO8 Regional Director, PCSupt Elmer C. Beltajar, the Double Barrel campaign shall sustain its clearing operations in the barangays through monitoring of drug surrenderees, neutralization of high valued targets and its continued support to MASA MASID.
Aside from drug related cases, operations against illegal gambling were also conducted resulting to the arrest of 140 people by which majority are from Leyte. A total cash amounting ₱22,275.00 were also confiscated.
The summit was composed of local government officials of the region and members of the military and police forces.
