DAVAO CITY – Senior Supt. Ronald dela Rosa, chief of the Davao City Police Office, reported that the investigation of the two explosions that brought damage to Cinema 1 of SM City Davao and Cinema 5 of Gaisano Mall on September 16 proves that the improvised explosive devises (IEDs) were found inside canned soft drinks.

Dela Rosa said that the investigation conducted by the Explosive Ordinance Division and the chemical analysis report of the Scene of the Crime Operation confirmed that fragments of tin cans were discovered in both bomb areas.

“This makes this kind of improvised explosive device to be unique from other IEDs, maybe to avoid detection from security guards that it is a bomb,” dela Rosa said.

He also verified that the IEDs used in the bombing of the two cinemas were powered by a portable battery which consists of a trigger activated cellphone and an explosive charge.

Dela Rosa said that they are now focusing on the closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera footage from the mall cinemas affected by the explosion.

“The investigation is going well. We are glad that many establishments in the city have CCTV cameras,” Dela Rosa said.

Meanwhile, Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte revealed that malls in Davao were already warned of bomb threats two days before the explosion. He even personally warned them to tighten up the security all over the said area.

Duerte assured the public that the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) is not responsible for the bombings as Nur Misuari, the MNLF leader, guaranteed that they are not liable for the said incident.

Duarte warns all the cinemas in Davao City to tighten the security to avoid another bomb attack.
