Olympian athlete Bruce Jenner, now known as Caitlyn Jenner, made headlines this week during the unveiling of her new identity on the latest cover of Vanity Fair.
Jenner cites as one of her inspirations, Geena Rocero, a Filipino model who made a similar reveal of her transgender identity in a TED Talk last year.
Another Filipino celebrity who openly declared her status as a transgender woman is 24-year-old Kevin Balot, winner of the 2012 Miss International Queen, a pageant for transgender women held annually in Thailand.
Balot bested 20 other delegates, bringing home the crown. Kevin, the only boy among three siblings, had always wanted to be a beauty queen, using her good looks and joining several pageants to pay for college.
Winning Miss International Queen was the culmination of her childhood dreams and many years of hard work.
Unlike Caitlyn Jenner, Kevin feels no need to change her name, saying her gender change was all she needed to make the transition, and that keeping the name “Kevin” was her way of respecting her parents, who gave it to her.
Kevin’s next goal is to join the next season of Pinoy Big Brother.
