21 year-old Valerie Hernandez from Puerto Rico was crowned Miss International 2014 after she bested 72 other contestants during the pageant night held last Tuesday, November 11 at the Grand Prince Hotel Takanawa in Tokyo, Japan.

Dressed in a gold-embellished white gown, Hernandez sobbed with joy as the Miss International crown and cape were passed to her by last year’s winner Ms. Bea Rose Santiago of the Philippines.

According to the Philippine Star, during the question-and-answer rounds in the lead-up to the finals, the candidates were asked if what would be their message to the world if they will be crowned Miss International 2014.

Hernandez termed winning the title as a hard responsibility, reports dailymail.co.uk.

“Thinking about Miss International title, I think it’s not just crown, it’s not just the title, it’s one of the hardest responsibility. As Miss International, I want to send a message of love, peace, and unity,” she said.

Hernandez celebrated her win flanked by the rest of the top five; first-runner up Zuleika Suarez of Colombia, second runner-up Punika Kulsoontornrut of Thailand, third runner-up Victoria Tooby of the United Kingdom and fourth runner-up Milla Romppanen of Finland.

Special awards are given to Ms.Colombia – Miss Friendship, Ms. India – Miss Internet Beauty, Ms. Indonesia – the National Costume, Ms. France – Miss Perfect Body and Ms. Colombia – Miss Best Dress.

Miss International 2014 is the 54th edition of the Miss International pageant that aims to promote love, peace, and excitement to the world.

This year’s pageant had 73 entrants from all over the world, with the age of 19 to 26.
