MANILA, Philippines – President Benigno Aquino III decided to fill in the 2 vacancies in the Commision on Elections (Comelec).
Comelec Chairman Sixto Brillantes received the president’s decision well and said, “We now have 2 women, 2 Muslims and 3 handsome men.”
The 2 people occupying the vacancies are former Lanao del Norte Rep. Macabangkit Lanto, a Muslim, and Maria Bernadette Sardillo.
Both will surely be of big help to the chairman with the pending election cases, for both are lawyers.
Brillantes said, “They will both help us and I welcome them … This would be the first time, I can recall, that there will be 2 Muslims in the commission.”
Lanto joins in fellow Muslim Commissioner Elias Yusoph.
Brillantes added that Lanto’s vast experience in the government will definitely make a big difference and a big help in the commission.
“This is the president’s prerogative. While he did not expect it, at least I know them both,” Brillantes said.
He also said that he had hoped that an information technology expert or an insider would be appointed, but he was not disappointed with the President’s decision.
“Beng Sardillo will be able to help us a lot in the cases because she is a practitioner. Lanto has been all over the government.”
While the two appointess might have to make adjustments when it comes to the automated elections, they will be ready to tackle on and “dispose of the cases,” the chairman said.
