MANILA, Philippines – Catholic church leaders have prayed and did everything they could to stop the passage of the Reproductive Health Law, but their efforts seemed to be finally thrown when the bill was passed into law.

This Team Patay-Team Buhay syndrome came about as senatorial bets and party-list groups vie for posts in the May 2013 elections reacted to their inclusion in either the Team Patay or Team Buhay list of candidates recommended for rejection or support by the Diocese of Bacolod City recently.

Meanwhile, 2 lay groups belonging to separate churches in Quezon City may come out with their own list of candidates to give support and to reject.

A knowledgeable source from one of the churches in the Archdiocese of Cubao reportedly revealed yesterday that, “They have actually arrived at a decision. The matter of the timing of the release is the remaining issue that they will decide on.”

According to the source the main objective is to help ensure the election of congressional and city council bets who will stand in the way of the passage of the “divorce and same-sex bills” and other measures that are against the teachings of the Catholic Church.

“We don’t expect the Church to openly support us, but we are confident they will not stop us, either,” adds the source.

Both members of United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) senatorial slate Reps. Mitos Magsaysay and JV Ejercito, welcomed their inclusion in the Team Buhay list containing the candidates to be supported by the Catholic leaders in Bacolod City.

Magsaysay nicknamed the “dragon lady” of the House of Representatives said, “I thank the Diocese of Bacolod for their support. They entitled to speak and campaign as they are stakeholders in the election.”

While Ejercito said his piece, Catholics in Bacolod are voters who, like all Filipinos, have the “freedom to express their sentiments.”
